The Manitoba Veterinary Medical Association is the professional organization of the province’s veterinarians. We are an independent, non-profit entity that is dedicated to promoting the excellence of the veterinary profession. Legislated by the Province of Manitoba’s Veterinary Medical Act, the MVMA is supported by its members. From our head office in Winnipeg, veterinarians come to us to obtain and renew their licenses. We also regulate the practice of veterinary medicine in Manitoba, and ensure that Manitobans have access to qualified veterinary care.
The MVMA is committed to furthering the excellence of the veterinary profession in Manitoba.
This is accomplished through four key areas: regulation, education, communication, and advocacy.
Veterinarians must hold a valid license from the MVMA in order to practice veterinary medicine in Manitoba.
To maintain their license, members must meet a standard of ethics and practice set by the MVMA.
We conduct random inspections of veterinary facilities and maintain an established peer review board that is tasked with investigating public concerns and preserving the high ethical and medical standards of the profession.
Through News & Views, our quarterly newsletter, and through The Post, our weekly e-bulletin, we share a variety of information such as medical case studies, research, events and profiles of distinguished Manitoban veterinarians.
We communicate extensively with other provincial veterinary associations, as well as with national and international organizations.
Advocacy: We support various executive committees that advocate for legislation and reform in areas from issues affecting pets, such as puppy mills, safeguarding the practice of livestock medicine the safe and appropriate use of veterinary drugs.
