Veterinarian Career Opportunity – Stonewall Veterinary Hospital, Stonewall MB

Thank you for taking the time to read about this career opportunity at our well-loved veterinary hospital (both by us & our clients).

This veterinary hospital is privately owned by Amanda Brown, 2007 WCVM grad. Amanda partnered at SVH in 2015, and became the sole owner in 2018. In an ideal world we are hoping to employ a veterinarian who has excellent communication skills, a penchant for making relationships, and an interest in becoming a partner in a Veterinary Hospital.

Some details:

Location: Stonewall is a growing community 20 minutes North of Winnipeg. It is a self-sustaining pretty town in the South Interlake region of Manitoba.

Clinic: easy to find, dedicated staff parking, dedicated vet/RVT office, dedicated staff room, three exam rooms, newly renovated parking lot, newly renovated surgery suite, excellent indoor lighting, excellent flow from reception to appointment to treatment room, the clinic is 3500 square feet (spacious), up to date cornerstone software (electronic files, paper lite), newly renovated isolation room, dedicated diagnostic imaging room

Hours of Operation: Monday to Friday 8am-6pm, Saturday 9am-4:30pm

Species: dogs & cats, with the occasional exotic mammal.

Team: These are the people who make SVH really great! In reception we have Jen (started 2012), Sydney (started 2019), Marissa (started 2020). Our Office Manager Kim (started 2019) is dedicated to our team and this clinic. We have three highly trained RVT’s; Angela (started 2011), Autumn (started 2018), and Chris (started 2021). Drew (started 2021) and Gavin (started 2018) are our veterinary assistants. This summer (2021) we hired a second year WCVM veterinary student. We currently rely on locum veterinarians to ‘fill the gaps’. Dr. Catton has been doing locum work with us since 2018, and Dr. Jerao joined our team in a locum capacity in 2021.

Clients: Well-trained that we practice gold standard medicine. We enjoy excellent compliance and our mission is to offer excellent service to our clients.

Medicine: 30 minute appointments, Equipment includes digital X-ray, ultrasound, Complete in-house idexx lab (catalyst, procyte, sedivue, snap tests, etc), tonovet, new microscope, full in-house pharmacy, laser therapy, etc.

Surgery: Tuesday to Friday, Mornings only, 3-5 surgeries per day (one dental per day), Equipment includes digital dental X-ray, surgivet anesthesia monitoring equipment, quality surgical instruments, well-appointed packs, etc.

Integrative Medicine: Amanda practices some Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine including acupuncture & herbal medicine. There is no expectation that a vet joining our team would have these interests or training.

Fear free: The whole team is at least fear free level 1 certified. We provide everyone on our team with this training.

Protocols: We follow protocols for repeatable things like wellness appointments, parasite control, vaccines, anesthesia, etc.

Employee Handbook: This was revamped Spring 2021 and if this job peaks your interest the handbook is something we would encourage you to read before committing to a career with us.

The opportunity:

Pay: That depends on you. It depends on how much you want to work, how much you produce when you work, and whether you partner. We could say $100,000 per year but maybe you would out-produce that and we would be way off. If production based work is not for you we can discuss a salary position. We will maintain flexibility.

Benefits: Extended health care benefits (Canada Life), Paid time off & continuing education (again, exactly how much depends on you and your personality and needs), Pension plan, Uniform allowance, the clinic is closed on Saturdays every long weekend, no on-call, a dedicated management team, monthly team meetings, lunch & learns, team building 3-4 times per year outside of office hours, etc.

Work-week: This can be flexible to an extent but in our minds a 4-day work-week, including a one-in-three Saturday rotation where you would work three weekdays when you work a Saturday.

Work-day: 8am-6pm (Mondays to Fridays) with a one-hour midday break, Saturdays 8:50am-4:30pm with a 1/2-hour midday break. In our day to day schedule, two emergency slots are held until the day-of, Two Doctor blocks are not filled and useful for phone calls and medical notes, the last appointment of the day (5pm) is dedicated for a Wellness appointment. Our goal is for the entire team to leave work at 6pm.
