Veterinary Student Employment Program (VetSTEP) Grant Information

Manitoba Agriculture values the practical experience that veterinary students gain during a summer work term with a rural veterinary practice. To encourage this work experience, the department will be offering grants to clinics and businesses that hire a veterinary student in the summer of 2024. The grant assistance available is based on the most recent year of study completed by the student at an accredited veterinary college:

  • First year student – $6,500
  • Second or Third year student – $5,000

Who Can Hire Veterinary Students as part of VetSTEP?

Veterinary practices and practitioners licensed to operate an active, large or mixed animal practice located in rural Manitoba are eligible to participate in the program. Clinics and practitioners specializing in small animal medicine are not eligible.

Businesses and non-profit organizations operating a livestock operation in rural Manitoba are eligible if they employ or have a service contract with a veterinarian licensed to practice large or mixed animal medicine in Manitoba. The veterinarian must directly supervise the student.

How Do You Advertise Your Interest in Hiring a Student?

If you are considering hiring a student, you can place an online job posting on the MVMA’s Student Practice Opportunities page.

You can also post your position on Summer employment for veterinary students – Western College of Veterinary Medicine – University of Saskatchewan (usask.ca). You can send your job posting as a WORD document (with no images) to the Student Services Manager at WCVM by emailing paige.links@usask.ca.

How Do You Contact VetSTEP and Submit a Grant Application?

For application forms and further information, you can visit the VetSTEP web page or email VSD@gov.mb.ca.

Once you and a student agree on summer employment, you can submit your application to VetSTEP by emailing VSD@gov.mb.ca. Both the employer and student must sign the application.

The application deadline is January 26, 2024.
