Considering Hiring a Veterinarian?

Veterinarians in Manitoba can come from a wide range of backgrounds, including recent graduates, internationally trained professionals, and students in training. Each can play a role in addressing shortages to veterinarian clinic staff.

Restricted License Veterinarians

As internationally educated veterinarians complete the required exams to become fully licensed, they have the opportunity to obtain a restricted licence. More information can be found here under Route 3. Hiring a restricted licence veterinarian allows a practice to mentor and build relationships with future fully licensed veterinarians. This fosters loyalty and familiarity, increasing the likelihood that these veterinarians will seek permanent employment after obtaining full licensure, benefiting both parties. Such mentorship also enriches the practice with diverse perspectives and skills during the employment period.

MVMA Resources:

Add your clinic to the Connecting Manitoba Practices with Internationally Educated Veterinarians resource. Once you sign up, your clinic will be provided with CVs of Internationally Educated Veterinarians that have a restricted licence or have met the testing requirements to obtain a restricted licence.

Veterinarian Students

Veterinarian students enrolled at CVMA/AVMA accredited programs are eligible for student memberships with the MVMA (for more information click here). Veterinarian Student Members are able to practice veterinary medicine in the province under the supervision of a veterinarian.

Hosting a veterinarian student for employment, an externship, or a rotation allows a practice to invest in the next generation of veterinarians while evaluating potential future hires in a real-world setting. By working closely with students, practices can assess their clinical skills, work ethic, and cultural fit, building strong relationships that often lead to seamless recruitment after graduation. This hands-on exposure benefits both the student and the practice, creating a pipeline of qualified candidates who are already familiar with the team and workflow, thus reducing onboarding time and increasing retention rate.

MVMA Resources:

Have your practice listed on the Veterinarian Student Practices Opportunity Map. This listing is free and frequently consulted by WCVM students when looking for employment.

Look at the Veterinarian Students Seeking Practice Opportunities Page. This resource provides an up-to-date list of Veterinarian Student Members who are looking for practice opportunities in Manitoba.

WCVM Community Awareness Program:

Each summer from May to August, WCVM vet students can give one-hour presentations on animal health to schools, 4-H clubs, and youth groups in their home communities. These sessions often include hands-on activities. Students are paid and supported by the WCVM admissions team.

If your clinic is hosting a student or knows of local groups that may be interested, consider sharing this opportunity. It helps students build confidence, connect locally, and encourages them to return after graduation.

WCVM VIP Day:

Each year, the Western College of Veterinary Medicine hosts VIP Day, an industry showcase organized by the graduating class. It offers vendors the opportunity to connect with future veterinarians, share their services, and support students on their path to the profession. The day includes booth space, meals, and valuable networking opportunities.

MVMA Student Events Information:

MVMA hosts events each year designed to help students connect with the Manitoba community. These events provide valuable opportunities for attendees to establish professional relationships, expand their professional networks, and gain insight into the local veterinary field. MVMA is dedicated to supporting students as they develop connections that will benefit their careers. To stay informed about upcoming student events, please visit our Members page.

Pre-Veterinary Students

Some pre-vet students seek volunteer, kennel, or assistant positions to gain experience before applying to vet school.Hiring a pre-vet student benefits a veterinary practice by providing valuable hands-on experience to the student while fostering a strong professional bond. This connection increases the likelihood the student will return to Manitoba and join the practice after graduation,
