HPAI Resources for clinics

Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) Surveillance in Wild Birds (Update received September 25, 2023)

Manitoba Agriculture, Natural Resources and Northern Development (NRND), and Veterinary Diagnostic Services (VDS) would like to inform veterinary teams that they can submit deceased wild birds directly to VDS for HPAI testing, as opposed to first contacting NRND. Private practitioners are reminded that more suspicious wild bird mortalities include deceased or neurologic raptors, waterfowl and corvids, though high numbers of mortalities in other bird species may also be suspicious. The cost of testing is covered by surveillance programs.

When submitting wild birds to VDS for HPAI surveillance, clinics are asked to fill out a “Zoo and Wildlife Submission Form” and identify the species to the best of their ability. Other important information required on the submission form includes the location (PID, legal land location or GPS coordinates – a farm name is unnecessary) and collection date. Submitters can indicate the test type by writing “avian influenza” in the “Other” line under the virology heading. Please be aware that results will be shared with government wildlife agencies for inclusion in national surveillance.

Any further questions regarding HPAI testing can be directed to the TIP line at 1-800-782-0076 or VDS at 1-204-945-8220.

The MVMA thanks Dr. Deanne Wilkinson and the Chief Veterinary Office for their work on this important topic.
